Psalm 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God."
Elijah had traveled many days until he arrived at Horeb, the mountain of God. Elijah was very tired so he went into the cave and spent the night. Then the next morning the Lord appears to Elijah and both had conversation together. The Lord asked him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah explained that they had killed the prophets of God and they tried to kill him, too. Elijah was so discouraged he wanted to die. Elijah thought that the Lord was ‘helpless’ and was not able doing anything about it. Have you ever felt that sometimes? Let’s see what the Lord would do about this.
The Lord asked Elijah to go out of the cave and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord. Probably, Elijah was seeing the ‘Glory of God.’ First, the Lord sends a great and powerful wind that tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks. Second, after the wind there was an earthquake. Third, after the earthquake, came a fire. But the Lord was not in any of this.
And after the fire, the Lord came to Elijah with a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard the gentle whisper from the Lord, he pulled his *cloak over his face and went out and stood before the Lord. Elijah became still and knew that gentle whisper was God. Elijah listened to the Lord’s instruction what he needed to do. Story is found in I Kings 19:9-18 NIV. *Cloak=a loose coat with no sleeves that you wrap around your shoulders and fasten at the neck. In KJV, a mantle is the same as cloak.
Why did God do three great things before Elijah? The Lord wanted to correct Elijah that He was not a helpless God. When Elijah heard God’s gentle whisper, he listened. To Elijah, the ‘Glory of God’ was in that gentle whisper. So let us ‘be still and know that He is God.’
Song: Be Still and Know that I am God.
Be still and know ... that I am God …
Why toss about and worry so …?
Be still and know … that I am God …
I’ll lead you where … the quiet waters flow …
