Jesus is Your Deliverer

February 20-21, 2014 - Jesus is Your Deliverer – Manna by Dorothy Callies

Luke 4:17b-18a “And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written, ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because he (God) hath anointed Me …’”

Where did Jesus found the place it was written in the book? “The book of Isaiah the prophet was given to Him. He opened the book and found the place where this is written” Luke 4:17 (NCV). “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he (Jesus) closed the book …” (Luke 4:18-20a KJV).

I was impressed with Jesus opened the book and read Isaiah 61:1-2 and then He closed the book. I wondered how they choose Him to read until I read this. “Jesus traveled to Nazareth, where He had grown up. On the Sabbath day He went to the synagogue, as He always did, and stood up to read” (NCV).  So it was His custom to read the Old Testament’s writings in synagogue while He was growing up.

Isaiah 61:1-2 from NCV, “The Lord has put his Spirit in me, because the Lord has appointed me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort those whose hearts are broken, to tell the captives they are free, and to tell the prisoners they are released. He has sent me to announce the time when the Lord will show his kindness …”

Here Jesus gives the purpose of His Spirit-anointed ministry: He was to preach the gospel; He was to heal; He was to preach deliverance; He was to open the spiritual eyes; He was to set them free; and He was to break the bondage from Satan. So Jesus is your deliverer. All those who are filled with the Spirit are called to share Jesus’ ministry of deliverance.

I was reminded of the chorus I sometimes sang: “He is Able to Deliver Thee.” I often sang the chorus and felt uplifted. I, also, sense the freedom from something that binds me. It is a faith chorus against Satan’s stronghold. Jesus is my deliverer and Jesus is your deliverer, too! Trust Him!

Song: He Is Able To Deliver Thee

He is a-ble to deliver thee,
He is a-ble to deliver thee;
Tho’ by sin oppressed,
Go to Him for rest;
“Our God is able to deliver thee.”
